I worked as a chef in residence while I was going to junior college and one of my first wine jobs involved restocking and managing a private cellar devoted to extraordinary German wines. Until that time I had been drinking the imported wines that were available in the local supermarkets - Blue Nun, Black Tower, Mateus etc. Tasting my way through that cellar introduced me to regions like Piesporter Goldtropfchen and wines like Trockenberenauslese and, to this day, they are some of my favorites.
